Job Description

The Genetic Counselor IV plays a pivotal role in advancing the genetic counseling program by integrating best practices and innovative approaches. Provides expert consultations supporting the CDC Newborn Screening and Molecular Biology Branch with interpretation of complex screening data. Will provide clinical insights needed for data interpretation, training, and development of communication strategies. Leads the design and implementation of programs supporting stakeholder engagement and collaboration, and development of the newborn screening workforce, ensuring the program remains at the forefront of the field and organization.

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS


  • Must be able to obtain and maintain the required customer clearance for access to systems, facilities, equipment and property.
  • Must have a Certified Genetic Counselors (CGC) certification from the American Board of Genetics Counseling (ABGC).

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES


Essential Duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
  • Oversees the genetic counseling program, ensuring integration of best practices and innovations.
  • Will serve as a "Newborn Screening Specialist" providing technical expertise to support data evaluation, clinical interpretation, public health integration, and longitudinal evaluation of newborn screening outcomes.
  • Advance tools and strategies including developing training resources, webinars, workshops and other collaboration initiatives.
  • Provide clinical context to advance data science and informatics initiatives, optimize workflows, and refine diagnostic capabilities.
  • Collaborate with state newborn screening programs and stakeholders to provide technical assistance and support for newborn screening personnel including developing training resources, webinars, workshops and other collaboration initiatives
  • Refine and implement standardized screening protocols that align with best practices and emerging clinical and technical advancements
  • Leads complex evaluations and provide expert consultation in genetic risk assessment and management.
  • Foster partnerships between NSMBB and its collaborators, promoting transparency, cultivating cooperation, and advancing innovation in NBS practices
  • Enhance and provide input for communication strategies by creating technical content for websites, newsletters, and Branch presentations.
  • Provide technical assistance and clinical expertise to support the interpretation of NBS related data, follow-up practices, program workflows.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE


Bachelor's degree required, Master's preferred, and a minimum of seven or more (7+) years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education/experience.

The work environment involves moderate hazards, risks or discomforts. Ability to sit, stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, and use hands along with fingers, to handle or feel. Ability to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include clarity of vision both near and far. Ability to speak and hear. Ability to identify and distinguish colors. Potential for exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals. Potential for exposure to blood borne pathogens. May be required to wear safety and personal protective equipment.

The estimated pay range for this role is $65K to $80K, with the final offer contingent on location, skillset, and experience.
