Job Description

Job Description: Dump Truck Driver

A. Job Identification.

  • Delivering aggregate to plant or construction job sites within a 100-mile radius of the plant. The average workload is 9 hours a day, which can change depending on the weather and business conditions.
  • B. Main Duties.

  • Conducts a pre-trip inspection (in accordance with D.O.T. regulations). This will include checking fluid levels, such as oil and antifreeze, and will be completed before starting in the morning. A post-trip inspection form must be completed and turned in.
  • Completes Daily Log and turns in at the end of the shift.
  • Ask the dispatcher for directions if needed.
  • Drives the truck to the quarry/pit and back to the designated plant or jobsite. The quarry/pit scale house operator loads the truck with aggregate, and the driver scales the load. The driver must get out of his truck and write the loaded weight on a scale ticket. The walking distance is about 20-30 feet. The driver drives to the designated plant, dumps the load, and gets out to make sure no stones are “hung-up” on the back. The driver returns to the pit for another round trip.
  • If the load was sold on a C.O.D., the driver collects the proper amount before unloading.
  • C. Job Requirements.

  • Must be able to take instructions and guidance from dispatchers, supervisors, and other management team members.
  • Must be able to do simple mathematics, including addition and subtraction.
  • Must have a Valid DOT Commercial Driver’s License with a Class A or Class B certification.
  • Must be able to pass a DOT drug screen and other required pre-employment testing.
  • Must have a clean driving record (subject to management approval).
  • You must be able to communicate with customers in potentially stressful situations.
  • Must be able to operate the vehicle in a safe manner and pass the required DOT road test.
  • D. Physical Demands.

  • This is moderately strenuous work. The driver must climb in and out of the truck as many as 20 times each day. The first step is about 18 to 24 inches above the ground, and the second step is about 12 inches above the first. Usually, a handhold or grab bar is provided to help the driver pull himself into the truck cab.
  • Many trucks have manual transmissions with a clutch and five or six gears that the driver must shift through for each stop and start while driving. This could average more than 200 shifts per day.
  • Periodically, the driver must wash his/her truck with a hose and a brush. The washing procedure requires a fair amount of climbing on the truck.
  • E. Environmental Conditions.

  • Drivers work the majority of the time outdoors. Weather conditions such as temperature, rain, snow, and other conditions may have a significant impact on the job.
  • Job sites vary greatly due to weather, location, and conditions. The ground is generally rough and/or muddy.
  • At times, there may be dust when driving in the quarry. The driver is advised to roll up the window to prevent dust from entering the cab.
  • It is understood that the above outline describes this job and includes its essential functions. It is also understood that some of this information could vary slightly from truck to truck and from one job site to another. Note that not all of the duties of this job are described above. The driver will perform those above and other duties as directed by the dispatcher, supervisor or other management team members.

The approximate time requirements for the duties of a dump truck driver during a nine-hour day are:

  • pre/post trip inspections: ½ hour.
  • drive the truck: about 8 hours.
  • end of the day clean up and paperwork: ¼ hour.
