Job Description

Clinical Research Nurse

The Clinical Research Nurse will participate in the conduct of clinical research trials involving various modalities of treatment for patients in the Irritable Bowel Disease Program in the Section of Gastroenterology in the Department of Medicine.

Responsibilities include screening and identifying eligible patients, evaluating potential subject data, scheduling and coordinating research visits, working closely with the study MD to determine which candidates can enter clinical research studies, obtaining informed consent from potential subjects, supervising research assistants, educating study subjects about study protocol, maintaining frequent contact with the subject, conducting clinical study visits in accordance with protocol, demonstrating proficiency in vital signs, venipuncture, intravenous line placement, glucose tolerance tests, administering study medication, monitoring the subject prior to, during and after study drug administration, eliciting and assessing adverse experiences, evaluating subject laboratory and physical findings, keeping the subject's primary physician updated on the subject's status, participating in the conduct of clinical research projects/studies, serving as a liaison between P.I., sponsoring agent, regulatory groups, patient, family members, referring MD's/community MD's, pharmacist, statistician and other members of the research team, assisting in the development of comprehensive databases, applying logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, interpreting information from caregivers, nurses, or physicians about patient condition, treatment plans, or appropriate activities, performing other related work as needed.

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field and knowledge and skills developed through 2-5 years of work experience in a related job discipline. Preferred competencies include fundamental working knowledge of clinical research, knowledge of patient care fundamentals, excellent verbal and written communication, ability to read documents or instruments, ability to perform multiple concurrent tasks with occasional interruptions, discretion and confidentiality while handling sensitive situations, ability to solve problems by applying math or reasoning principles, and ability to adapt to changing work situations and work assignments.
